Spirit of Ukraine
While working on this piece I saw how powerful, and strong she was developing. At the same time I saw how brave and strong the Ukrainian people were, so I named her in their honor.
My daughter’s shoe inspired me. I saw a bird with a shiny gold beak. And since I mostly create my artwork from discarded materials, I searched through my collections for bird-like materials to transform the shoe into a bird.
Nothing new but the glue!
From my collection I used:
Shoe, sheepskin from my daughter
Feathers, beaded garland from my sister
Wings from my granddaughters
Gold paint, eye beads, stick from my leftovers
I come from a family of gardeners, makers, fixers, and creators. I was raised to not waste anything — man-made or natural. So I prefer to use materials that have had a former life. I see an abundance of material everywhere and it inspires me! My friends and family keep me well supplied, but I also source my materials from yard sales, thrift shops, and walking around.
It’s easy to find beauty and utility in many things that are discarded. They may have outlived their original purpose but that doesn’t mean that they are useless. I try to see beyond the first use and see the object as a shape, color, size, texture. If it’s interesting, attractive, unique, or useful, I will be tempted to bring it home. The recycled materials used in the artwork of El Anatsui and others inspires me. Beauty from trash. It changes the way you think.
I am saddened by the amount of land fill we generate. I believe that consumers, makers, and manufacturers are all responsible for this situation and each of us should take action to reduce waste. Let’s recycle, make art, protest, protect our environment — whatever is your calling.
Please note: Due to differences in monitor settings, colors may appear slightly different on screen than in-person.
