Tom Dowling
Tom Dowling has been an active artist since 1978. Growing up in southern California meant that the city of Los Angeles and its culture influenced his artistic aesthetic. Minimalism, California Light and Space, and Finish Fetish movements are all ingrained in his studio practice.
Understanding that the early abstract movements of the 20th century were the theoretical and formal basis for contemporary art, he immersed himself into those primary sources, creating dialogues between himself and the founders and innovators. Tom explored various techniques and philosophies over the years, establishing a large body of work that eventually evolved into strong personal style that, while referencing those earlier movements, feature his own take on the modernist language.
Since the early 1990s he has split his time between the U.S. and Europe. Ancestral ties allowed him to establish citizenship in Ireland, where he settled in 2017. He maintains active studios in both California and West Cork. His artwork and scenes from both studios can be seen on tomdowling.com.
The three works in this exhibition are from the ongoing series “Baroque Minimalism”. Not a juxtaposition of terms but a dynamic confluence of the minimal aesthetic with the active and decorative elements of the Baroque.
