Announcing the 2021 Judith Hendler Design Competition
in partnership with the Huntington Beach Art Center
The Cocoon Cloak

In a desire to find sanctuary and comfort in a time of turmoil, Judith Hendler invites you to create the unisex COCOON CLOAK. Answering the base needs of self-expression and protection from the elements on the human form, the competition is inspired by traditional multi-functional garments like the Caftan, Tunic, and Poncho.  ​

ELIGIBILITY

Participation is open to regional community college fashion design students with a faculty sponsor or HBAC members 18 years of age and older. One submission per participant. ​

design challenge

Create a garment using this simple pattern to embody sustainable design ethos: re-use, recycle, up-cycle. Online submission packet with community college faculty sponsorship or HBAC membership required for entry. Finished garments are delivered to HBAC for exhibition installation and final review. Low contact reservations required for garment delivery and pick up.

Cash prize awards for 1st , 2nd , and 3rd place in Community College Fashion Student and HBAC Member categories.

Delivery reservation system will open online April 1.  Participants will be notified via email to make pick up reservations when the exhibition closes. 

Requirements

Must be an original, sustainable design meeting the defined pattern and online submission requirements.
Use one or more sustainable design techniques. Zero-waste design suggestions: zero-waste pattern cutting and up-cycling | patch working | layering | fusing | vertical and horizontal seams for arms pockets | crochet, knitting, or quilting | piercing, cutting, layering of fabric | decorative approaches to top fold | beading, embroidery, fringe, tassels, patches  

Textile Suggestions

Textile swatches | end-of-rolls | factory surplus | sampling yardage | damaged textiles | clothing samples | secondhand textiles | non-textile waste | a combination of these materials

online SUBMISSIONS

  • Sustainable design techniques and textiles are required to compete
  • Designer's name, email, and phone #
  • Community College with faculty sponsor OR HBAC membership level
  • Garment title
  • Materials list
  • Estimated garment dimensions
  • Sustainable design statement
  • Sketch(es) of the creative process, ex. croquis sketch, flats
  • 300 dpi JPG images of materials used to create the garment
  • 300 dpi JPG images of finished work: front, back, and styled on form/person

HBAC EXHIBITION ​

All submissions will be displayed May 1 – June 12 online and in the HBAC public galleries. Reservations are required for garment delivery and pick up. Loaned garments are not insured by HBAC or the City of Huntington Beach. Mailed or late submissions will not be accepted. HBAC staff require the following to accept or release garments.
  • 2 copies of the completed loan agreement
    • Downloadable form available on the HBAC exhibition website
    • Artist will retain one signed copy for garment pick up
  • 2 attached labels on the front and securely inside the garment
    • Downloadable template available on the HBAC exhibition website
    • Temporary front labels are removed and disposed of by HBAC staff
  • Garments must be on a hanger  

HBAC Resale Policies

Garments can be made available for sale on the Huntington Beach Art Center website and to gallery visitors for the duration of the exhibition but it is not required to participate.
  • Designer determines garment resale price
  • The Art Center will not negotiate price with a potential buyer
  • The City of Huntington Beach charges a non-negotiable 40% fee for all exhibition sales
  • Garments identified for sale are restricted from resale through other external sources
  • Designer’s social security number is required to process payment

delivery & pick up reservations

Online reservations open April 1 on the HBAC website. Designers may assign someone to deliver and/or pick up their submission. Garments will not be accepted or released without the original signed loan agreement or sales receipt. HBAC is unable to provide or store packing materials. Garments left after July 31, 2021 will become property of HBAC and subject to disposal.
