If the Shoe Fits

Picture
Shoes are a notion not to be easily dismissed. We are expected to wear them and in many places we are required to wear them. No shoes, no shirt, no service! However, take shoes and put them in the hands of a remarkable designer, and shoes become more than a functional object to protect the feet. As renowned artist Judith Hendler sees it, shoes become a multi-faceted object of design. Reimagined and repurposed, the shoe takes on a myriad of uses. An object to recreate that tells fantastic stories about the wearer, describes an evening of celebration, envisions a city celebrating a night on the town and enables us to tiptoe through the tulips! Judith has challenged California Community College students and members of the Huntington Beach Art Center to explore the theme of footwear in this year’s newest design project utilizing core concepts of sustainability. Her challenge was well met. If the Shoe Fits features 60 creatively imagined shoe-based artworks in both traditional and sculptural mediums. Colorful, creative, useful and frivolous, artists took hold of the notion and ran with it. As the viewer will see, the range of ideas included in the exhibition could inspire one to begin a journey of 1,000 steps or simply enjoy a night on the town.

I am a 22 year old artist from Southern California currently enrolled within the Studio Arts program at my local community college. I enjoy playing with paint, music, and 3-D design through my journey of finding my artistic voice. Flameboot is an experiment with line, form, and abstraction. Originally modeled after my favorite pair of heeled platforms, Flameboot not only encapsulates the shoes visually but also through delightful spirit.

This 3D wire art was made in honor to my favorite and most worn brand of shoe, Birkenstock! This is also the first shoe I've ever constructed and honest, it was a lot of challenging fun. Too bad it can never literally be worn, as I love to design practical things, but this shoe would be just as painful to walk in as most women's heels are anyway!
I believe that everyone, women especially, should take care of their feet and care more about the comfort and support that quality shoes can provide for the body, rather than subject themselves to unnecessary pain for "beauty."
Yes, comfortable shoes can still be pretty, cute, and sexy; and most importantly, feeling good in your body allows your true spirit to shine through which is always more beautiful than painful fashion trends.
I will support brands like Birkenstock until I die (or until they change their standards or craftsmanship) because they support me back.

When ever I work on an art project I try to think outside the box. It inspires me to create a unique formation that catches the eye. The use of discarded, found and multiples of objects is a fundamental element of my work. These materials are merged with form to tell a story. "Birds Eye View of My Shoe" certainly captures my vision of collaborating all those elements!

The root of my inspiration comes from nature, particularly flora and fauna. The beginning phases of my process include going outside, observing, and taking photographs of anything that catches my eye that I could incorporate into a piece of art. I like to balance reality with a dreamy edge, adding in colors or elements that allow an interpretation by the observer.

I replicated a heel using masking tape and alcohol-based markers to add color. The use of masking tape conveys that any mundane material can be given a better purpose when not in use. It was a challenge to make as the heel I was replicating has many curves, and thick masking tape doesn't curve easily. After completing the heel, I was inspired to add more color through flowers and a reminder that all shoes carry the history of the person who wore them, hence the skull.

For this still-life painting, I incorporated objects found on my walks in these boots into the surface of the canvas. Plastic, tree bark, fabric scraps, and more were incorporated into the underlayer of the painting, onto which the painted still-life was then superimposed. Working in this way and manipulating found material in combination with paint allows me to think of painting as a sculptural endeavor. The title is a play on words, acknowledging that the shoes depicted once existed in motion, and a reference to walking meditation, in which the mind is still even while the body is moving.

Santa Ana College
My name is Ngan Tran, I come from Vietnam and currently I am studying fashion design at Santa Ana College. I have more than 1 year studying fashion design at university in Vietnam. Also I had an extra course on fashion illustration for 6 months. In addition, I have learned and used Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Fashion has been a passion of mine since I was very young when I watched my mother choose her everyday clothes for work or fashion shows on TV. Since then I have always dreamed of becoming a fashion designer so that I could pursue it and develop it. When I do fashion I feel like I can be myself, I draw what I like, when I see beautiful clothes on the catwalk or at fashion shows I feel great. I can draw inspiration from anything around me. I love being creative on clothes or accessories. Fashion for me is an indispensable thing in life, it helps me to unleash my passion. I always look forward to having more opportunities to work and experience this design industry. I will definitely do it with both my enthusiasm and my creativity. The style that I aim for is what is traditional but is broken and mixed to make it more modern but still retain its original beauty. So my work this time is an idea based on the traditional beauty of my hometown in Vietnam. I use the image of the lotus, which is the national flower and the flower that represents Vietnam. This design work is named "Lotusen" by me, which is the name of the lotus flower when it is combined with the word "Lotus" in English and the word "Sen" in the Vietnamese sense and it is designed on a pair of boots. I chose this combination instead of high heels because I wanted it to have the power of boots but also a lightness of lotus. With the use of green, pink is the color of the lotus, I also combine blue to represent the sky, brown and red for the earth. I wanted to combine it all to create the feeling that the viewer is looking at a lotus pond. I wanted to keep it's traditional beauty, but when I put it on, I used striking colors and added 3D petals to the back to make it look more modern without losing the typical beauty of the product, that flower. I hope you can see and like this design of mine.

Spirit of Ukraine
While working on this piece I saw how powerful, and strong she was developing. At the same time I saw how brave and strong the Ukrainian people were, so I named her in their honor.
My daughter’s shoe inspired me. I saw a bird with a shiny gold beak. And since I mostly create my artwork from discarded materials, I searched through my collections for bird-like materials to transform the shoe into a bird.
Nothing new but the glue!
From my collection I used:
Shoe, sheepskin from my daughter
Feathers, beaded garland from my sister
Wings from my granddaughters
Gold paint, eye beads, stick from my leftovers
I come from a family of gardeners, makers, fixers, and creators. I was raised to not waste anything — man-made or natural. So I prefer to use materials that have had a former life. I see an abundance of material everywhere and it inspires me! My friends and family keep me well supplied, but I also source my materials from yard sales, thrift shops, and walking around.
It’s easy to find beauty and utility in many things that are discarded. They may have outlived their original purpose but that doesn’t mean that they are useless. I try to see beyond the first use and see the object as a shape, color, size, texture. If it’s interesting, attractive, unique, or useful, I will be tempted to bring it home. The recycled materials used in the artwork of El Anatsui and others inspires me. Beauty from trash. It changes the way you think.
I am saddened by the amount of land fill we generate. I believe that consumers, makers, and manufacturers are all responsible for this situation and each of us should take action to reduce waste. Let’s recycle, make art, protest, protect our environment — whatever is your calling.

The title of the S_HOME shoe came from the abbreviation: Sport_Home. The S_HOME design was constructed based on a sustainable design way. In other words, the shoe was crocheted and is hundred percent handmade.
I used many leftover yarns and two different crochet hooks. The crochet hook sizes were 5 mm and 4 1/2 mm.
The S_HOME shoe design was inspired by the popular sports shoe "Converse". As we know, most people love to wear the "converse" shoe without any age restriction. For this reason, I wanted to create a "converse" shoe style to be worn at home as home slippers to enjoy it more.
The crocheted S_HOME is super light, looks very stylish, and is very comfortable.

“Deus Ex Machina, (Latin: “god from the machine”) a person or thing that appears or is introduced into a situation suddenly and unexpectedly and provides an artificial or contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty.”
Athena Ex Machina is a young machine/woman who dwells in a city of the future. She has returned to teach us about the destiny of the human species and the lessons humans must learn in order to survive.
Using her mind and technology to regenerate herself, Athena Ex Machina is part of an ongoing body of work that questions the idea of designing life, blurring the borders between human potential and the omnipotent.

As slow songs play, kids find partners they like, or long, to dance with. When rock-n-roll records play, they circle around the best “boppers” and loudly cheer them on under the gym lights! My functional work primarily explores the role between form and storytelling. With “Old Skool” I explored the idea of fashion becoming more sustainable. I used the style of shoes from my childhood and recycled cardboard to create a new form. The shoe is made up of only cardboard, glue and some string. It is a functional piece that is meant to explore the journey towards a more sustainable life.

One of my dad's favorite hobbies is going bird watching around marshlands. It is an extended process that requires stealth and attentiveness, and one might not see any birds unless they are paying close attention. I designed a shoe that resembled a marsh to blend in with the surrounding and included a spongey bottom to minimize the impact of footsteps. I positioned a family of great egrets nesting within the shoe to convey the elusiveness of the marshes that has always interested me. This shoe comments on the importance of existing in the present moment, and the magical things that may reveal themselves.

When a boot becomes a fish story. Can you see it? Look closely. There is more to this boot than for keeping a foot warm. It is now a messenger. Do you feel it?
Can you hear it?
If not, it’s OK for now. Others have a gavel to be heard and a horn to warn each other that there is a danger to our seas.
Sometimes those calls for help can’t be heard at all, and we need to turn to our other senses to listen all the more and heed the calls for help from our oceans. For there are so many ways to “see” and be “seen.”
You “see” there is magic in the world and “the kindest” hope for our seas… with new ways of seeing and being than we can imagine.

My son has ADHD, so all through his childhood we spent hours at the beach running, playing and finding treasures in the sand. We found coins, toys, jewelry, shells and other things that we considered our treasure of the day. He's now 18 and going off to college. I never had time for art because of him, but have no regrets because time with your children is a treasure in itself. I now have time to do my art and couldn't think of a better way to display our lifetime of "Beach Treasures" than to make it into art.
This flip flop is 90% made from found objects from the beach. The wood pillars are driftwood we found, the sandal straps are palm fronds. The shells are from our time visiting Grandma in Florida and the items in the middle are our found beach treasures.

This shoe is originally from the 1880s. Made of soft white leather. My inspiration for this piece is opera boots from the late Victorian era. Opera boots were highly decorated footwear. Many opera boots had bows attached, and the uppers were often made of different textures of leather to give the appearance of a dress shoe worn over a stocking. I got inspired by the intricate designs they made from that time period and came up with my own design. A piece that is still wearable in today’s fashion.

If the shoe fits….the path will guide
”May I be a guard for those who need protection
A Guide for those on the path
A boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood
A resting place for the weary
A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles
And for the boundless multitudes of living beings
May I bring sustenance and awakening
Until all beings are freed from sorrow
And all are awakened”
The aforementioned Prayer for Humanity (excerpted) written by Buddhist monk Shantideva gives strong credence to how life should be lived. This literary work falls into the lap of El Camino, an auspicious network of nine pathways leading to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The physically grueling trek, sought after by individuals worldwide, acts as an otherworldly catharsis and a reawakening of the soul.
My creation was inspired by the movie, The Way (starring Martin Sheen) and by Brian Bouldrey who rode a bicycle on El Camino after having lost his partner in the mid-1980s to AIDS. Both men were grappling with their loss and attempting to process grief and make sense of the world and life on a deeper, more spiritual level.
“Camino Frances” (also known as the “Way of St. James”) has two levels of complexity. Firstly, footwear is a sine qua non to make this 800 kilometer sojourn. All forty-nine shoes (positioned as a stride) symbolically represent the cross-section of humanity, indiscriminate of social strata, religious persuasion, race or sex. Secondly, the shoe motif is more obliquely revealed in eleven historic landmarks and outreaches. Shoes were needed to construct tunnels, bridges, castles, pottery, till the fields and sail the ocean. Without them “Camino Frances” and its tributaries would be nonexistent. For a more intriguing, multitudinous dimension, I chose to angle my 64” wide canvas and add topographical relief for mountainous texturing made of papier-mâché.
Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, the most profound structure, incorporates a selection of Topsider© soles and inner layers of New Balance© running shoes to realize the façade, columns and tympanum. There’s a cross sectional of the church interior, complete with pews, altar and linen cloth. Block tiling inside the Tunél de San Andrían’s was extracted from woman’s golf shoes; the roof atop O Cebreiro is made from fluffy bedroom slippers.
“The Way” begins in the French mountain town of St. Jean Pied de Port while also passing through Roncesvalles (Pilgrim’s Church), Pamplona (sign only), Irache (housing a bodega that serves complimentary red wine from two spigots for trekkers), Navarrete (known for its exquisite pottery), the Frías Castle ruins, Sahagún (Pilgrim’s Hospice) and crossing over the Nive de Béhérobie and the Rio Ebro (the Puente de Piedra in Lograño).
Careful selection of colors and textures were made to simulate ideas of stone, mortar, wood, gravel, grass, weirs and tempestuous seas.
The shoe is a fundamentally crucial component within any civilization. Without this commodity, no Pilgrimage would exist.
…but it has…since the 10th century.

I also wanted to pay homage to some of the most incredible and hard working women I have had the privilege to work alongside. It was important to me to not only celebrate what I had accomplished as a factory worker in several different factory work situations but to bring awareness to at least one of the many issues women deal with on a daily..equal pay.
This mosaic sculpture is dedicated to all the women who work extra hard behind the scenes in factories everywhere providing for their families and holding their own. I see you..I hear you...I am you. Forever grateful for your strength and inspiration.

Stevie Nicks is the inspiration for those boots. As she always wears platform boots while performing on stage, I created a platform bellow boot for her.

Nothing like finding that perfect pair of shoes and wishing, hoping and praying that they will fit.

Elegance and color, two sights I love to witness. I was attracted to a small photo of these shoes because of the beautiful details to the embroidered flowers and softness of the fabric. I found myself gazing at these colors and beauty of the shoes. I also found myself slipping into my mind's eye witnessing a movement of color to music and joy on the dance floor, leaving my reality of a pandemic for the pleasing senses of aesthetically looking shoes.

I've always loved collecting shells while walking on the beach, feeling the sand under my feet, with the sparkling ocean lapping around my ankles. I decided to create a shoe, displaying some of my favorite parts of the beach. While 6" heels don't necessarily scream "beach wear", I think it encapsulates the Southern California lifestyle...fun & laid back, yet elegant, artistic & unique.

Marilyn Monroe quoted,
"Give a girl the right shoe and she can conquer the world!"
I immediately thought how funny it would be to have a shoe you could drink wine from. It was funny to me. Never thought I would enter it but here it is.

In my work I was committed to representing my early childhood memories. Much of what I know now to be my home was a life less structure waiting for resurrection. As a child I recall my home with a disagreeable appearance. With the addition of living beings, vegetation, color, and vibrancy, this hostel and lackluster structure became a home. As time has gone by, many of the small plants became trees and such trees give fruit. I realized that in any demoralizing situation having the determination to see opportunity beyond apparent dismay will allow you to make a truly positive change in all the aspects of your life.

This shoe is a testament to my mother. Someone who's worth ethic is only matched by her amazingly beautiful artist's heart and soul. My mom works tirelessly at her sales job in the landscaping industry, a job literally full of lush blooms and flowers, but hiding underneath the foliage are thorns, stress, deadlines, quotas, and, worst of all, self-doubt. It breaks your heart to see these stresses being put on someone you love with your whole being. However, she never ceases to amaze me with her calm persistence and dedication. “Kill them with kindness.” She says. And it works. She just loves being around plants. If a flower catches her attention, she will always stop what she’s doing, no matter how “important” it may be, to take a moment and appreciate every part of the flower, the leaves, the stem, the soil in which it grows. And you can watch the world around her slow down and eventually pause as she and the flower make eye-contact. And in those moments it's hard not to realize how connected we all are. And how indescribably and painfully beautiful our natural world is. And how deep my love is for my mother. When people talk about religion, that is Mom’s religion. And it’s mine, too.
