Huntington Beach Art Center presents California Impressionism: Plein Air Painting, Past and Present, an exhibition for art-lovers who also love Impressionist painting. The bold color, bravura brushwork, and “captured light” of this historical and contemporary artistic movement have captivated audiences on the West Coast since the turn of the twentieth century. The Southern California community will now have an opportunity to view paintings of historical masters, as well as purchase those of contemporary painters who are inspired by light, nature, climate, and creative fellowship. The Huntington Beach Art Center will open its doors to give viewers a glimpse of a group of artists united across history through their love of subject and their passion to paint outdoors en plein air. “Our vision for this show is to present to the public an exhibition that they’ve never before seen, that is beautiful, historical, educational, and spectacular,” Director of the HBAC, Kate Hoffman notes. This exhibition will have a dual focus. On one hand, it will feature masterworks of painters who were inspired by this area in the early decades of the 20th century; enough to move here, build here, and start a colony of artists known today as the city of Laguna Beach. Alongside those works, the exhibition will also feature the creations of a select group of artists from the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA), many of whom live in California, and all of whom have painted within the State. The Art Center has invited both Signature and Artist members of LPAPA, whose works you see in galleries, magazines, competitions, exhibitions, and shows across the country.
The Irvine Museum, courtesy of Mr. Jean Stern, Executive Director, is loaning several pieces from its eminent collection to the Huntington Beach Art Center for this exhibition. Included among them will be: John Frost- The Pool at Sundown; John Gamble - Poppy Fields near Banning; Granville Redmond- Moonlight Marsh Scene; William Wendt- Crystal Cove; Donna Schuster- Los Angeles Harbor; Marion Wachtel- Santa Monica. In addition, De Ru’s Fine Arts has lent over 20 historical works by artists Edgar Payne, Anna Hills, George Brandriff, Joan Cromwell, Robert Wood and more.
These artworks have never before been on view at the Art Center, and merit special recognition for their significant place in this show. They will represent the attraction of the California coast and countryside for the early inhabitants of emerging communities, such as Carmel, Los Angeles, San Diego, Pasadena, and Laguna Beach. The artist Anna Hills, along with a collection of artists in Laguna Beach, formed an association in 1918 to exhibit their works, which ultimately became the Laguna Art Museum.
Along with the impressive presentation of historical works, the Art Center will exhibit the works of more than twenty notable contemporaries. Signature artists include Ken Auster, Carl Bretzke, John Budicin, Saim Caglayan, Hui Lai Chong, Rick J. Delanty, Carolyn Hesse-Low, Jeff Horn, Debra Huse, Paul Kratter, Jim McVicker, Clark Mitchell, Michael Obermeyer, Camille Przewodek, Lori Putnam, April Raber, Jeff Sewell and Jason and Michael Situ. More than twenty Artist members have also submitted incredible work, including Lynn Gertenbach, Clark Mitchell, Terry Masters, James McGrew, Frank Serrano, and Tom Swimm. “Our galleries will be brimming with over one hundred of the best historical and contemporary California landscapes, for the education and enjoyment of our viewers. We are proud to partner with The Irvine Museum, LPAPA and the De Ru’s Fine Arts to bring this exciting concept to the public”, says Hoffman.
